{"id":506,"date":"2021-01-12T02:44:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T02:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ginninderra.com\/gi\/?p=506"},"modified":"2023-12-12T02:44:37","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T02:44:37","slug":"25000-native-murray-cod-have-been-released-into-lake-ginninderra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ginninderra.com\/gi\/25000-native-murray-cod-have-been-released-into-lake-ginninderra\/","title":{"rendered":"25,000 native Murray Cod have been released into Lake Ginninderra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 25,000 native Murray Cod have been released into Lake Ginninderra as part of the ACT Government\u2019s annual fish stocking program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minister for the Environment Rebecca Vassarotti said the introduction of the Murray Cod will provide lasting environmental benefits by improving the ecology of Lake Ginninderra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur annual fish stocking program is crucial in helping our lakes and ponds continue to have healthy populations of native fish,\u201d Minister Vassarotti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIntroducing a large native predator like Murray Cod into our lakes helps balance the lake\u2019s ecosystems that would otherwise consist of pest species, like European Carp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMurray Cod do not naturally breed in our urban lakes due to the still water environment, so regular stocking of the species is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fish stocking program has added over 1.5 million native fish in the ACT since 1964, when Lake Burley Griffin was established.
