Bargang is a local first-nations word from the Ngunnawal language for “yellow box gum”. The Bargang Gum Forest on the Northern Peninsula of Lake Ginninderra features a number of the tall Eucalyptus species. These trees have rough, flaky or fibrous bark on part or all of the trunk, smooth greyish to yellowish bark above.
The Bargang Gum Forest is easily reached on the Pedestrian Pathway from either Diddams Close Park or Bimbi Beach. Walk amongst the Gum trees or sit by the Lake’s edge on one of the two jetties along the foreshore.
Bimbi Beach is home to a local Cockatoo Colony in the Gum Forest which is worth a visit in the early mornings to hear their chorus-like deafening screeches.
