The Ginninderra Drive Spillway is located near the Ginninderra Creek Dam Wall on the north west edge of Lake Ginninderra and Diddams Close Park to its east. People are not allowed to enter the water as marked by the signage. The area (and its surrounds) is used for Water Sports including fishing.
Lake Ginninderra was constructed in 1974 to collect stormwater discharge from a 98.8 square kilometres (38.1 sq mi) catchment that includes the surrounding suburbs of eastern Belconnen.
The lake was formed through the construction of the Ginninderra Drive embankment across Ginninderra Creek. The lake has a surface area of 1.05 square kilometres (0.41 sq mi) and an average depth of 3.5 metres (11 ft). Water flow out of the lake is via a multi-celled concrete culvert structure and spillway chute on the Ginninderra Drive embankment. The Lake Ginninderra Weir is found on the Evatt side of the Spillway. The Weir is the entry point for water flowing into the Western arm of Ginninderra Creek along the William Web Reserve.
The Ginninderra Creek catchment carries approximately a quarter of Canberra’s urban runoff, and there is considerable risk of runoff from urban areas harming aquatic ecosystems in the Murrumbidgee River system.
